Nandori Cukraszda
There are numerous pastry specialties at Nandori including multi-layered, classic and scrumptious rich cakes. Many Hungarians even order their Birthday cakes especially from this shop so it is not surprising as to why it is in the list of the top five pastry shops in Budapest. The Somloi Galuska (a chocolate and vanilla sponge cake) and the Pogasca are definite favorites, and a must try if you get the chance to visit!
Szalai Cukraszda
This is a true old fashioned pastry shop that has been run as a family business for years. Located near the Parliament building this is number two on our list of the top five pastry shops in Budapest for a good reason! A trip inside this shop will show you walls covered with awards and dozens of regular customers. A definite pastry to try in here is the Retes (strudel).
Daubner Cukraszda
This is arguably the second oldest pastry shops in Budapest. In business since 1901, it is located just outside the center of the city yet it is still one of the busiest eateries around. During the summer months Daubner’s makes their own ice cream and it is not uncommon to see people queuing out of the door for a taste of one of these delights. Other sumptuous pastries include Begjli (a pastry with walnut and poppy seed filling), Pogacsa (a Hungarian biscuit), and numerous cookies, cakes and desserts.
Auguszt Cukraszda
We’ve showed you the second oldest pastry shop in Budapest, and now here is arguably the oldest. Established in 1870 this pastry shop has a very varied history. It was destroyed during the Second World War due to a bomb and then it was under the state’s ownership during Hungary’s communist era. The original owners regained control in the late 1950’s and have been making delicious pastries to their original recipes ever since. There are now three shops of this name in Budapest and dozens of delicious pastries to enjoy.
Frohlich Cukraszda
This pastry shop in Budapest is immensely popular for its Hungarian-Jewish treats. Unlike some of the others this pastry shop has a seating area which you will find packed during the Jewish holidays. Pastries to definitely try include their dobos cake and the flodni (a walnut, apple and poppy seed pastry). With dozens of other delectable treats on offer you won’t go hungry in this pastry shop in Budapest, that’s for sure!
